I was once told: everyone’s garage is more interesting than yours. Well, Gerard Hosier’s garage must be more interesting than anyone’s. At SMPTE13, Gerard curates a retrospective technology exhibit which will bring back memories for the old hands, and surely surprise those who didn’t live through the magical world of analogue TV and Radio.

Gerard will be displaying iconic and interesting examples of photogenic engineering marvels from Australia’s television and movie making past. Many Australian broadcasters will recognise bits of their DNA on the stand. And Gerard will be available on the floor to describe the long and winding road of technological challenges that have brought us to where our industry is today.

Many exhibits could be used as a gateway to link to today’s movie making products and practices.

Previous exhibits have shown that young audiences are interested in the history of television and they enjoy the hands-on experience that links them to the now mythical times of early television. We’ll find out, because the Retro Tec display is at stand A21 in Hall 3 of the Convention Centre, right next to the Student Video Project OB Van and Hosting Studio.
