About the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers® (SMPTE®)
Since 1916, SMPTE has been the group making sure the “magic” of media actually reaches the screen. We are a global society of engineers, technologists, and creatives who handle the technical heavy lifting that most audiences take for granted. From the early days of celluloid to the massive, cloud-based streaming networks of 2026, we provide the underlying framework that allows stories to travel across borders without losing their quality. If you’ve ever watched a film or a live broadcast and didn’t have to worry about the format or the frame rate, you’ve experienced our work in action.
Our mission revolves around the development and maintenance of more than 800 international standards and practices. Think of these as the industry’s shared grammar; they ensure that a production shot in Tokyo can be edited in London and premiered in Los Angeles without a single technical glitch. By standardizing everything from ST 2110 for IP workflows to High Dynamic Range (HDR), we remove the friction that usually slows down global production. We handle the complex “how” of media technology so that directors and broadcasters can focus on the “what.”
Technology moves fast, and right now we’re in the middle of a massive shift toward AI-integrated workflows and software-defined architectures. We aren’t just watching these changes happen; we’re setting the ground rules for them. Our current work focuses on critical areas like content provenance—ensuring audiences can trust the authenticity of what they see—and the continued migration of production to the cloud. We bridge the gap between experimental research and the everyday tools used on sets and in studios worldwide, making sure that as media evolves, it stays reliable and interoperable.
At its heart, SMPTE is a community of over 5,000 members who share a bit of a technical obsession. We’re a mix of students just starting their careers and industry veterans who have spent decades perfecting the craft. Through our peer-reviewed Motion Imaging Journal, local sections on every continent, and events like our annual Media Technology Summit, we keep the global conversation going. We are a collective of professionals dedicated to getting the details right, ensuring the future of storytelling remains as bright and technically perfect as possible.
