Persistence of Vision – Defining the Future
We need your ideas, thoughts, suggestions and offers. Even if you don’t have a fully-formed abstract or completed proposal, get your vision in the queue so that it can be considered. Register in EDAS now: don’t wait until the last minute.

A full list of proposed topics may be found at: SMPTE15 Conference Topics. If you have an idea that isn’t on that list, that’s OK. The first selection in the registration process is “Any topic not currently defined”, and we love new concepts.
Deadline for submissions has been extended. Submissions should comprise a topic heading, paper title, and a short abstract or outline (50-100 words) through our online content submission tool, EDAS.
- If a concept requires development, we will work with you to help you get your idea across the line.
- If you are proposing on behalf of someone else, use your details but make that obvious.
- Acceptances will be notified within four weeks of closing. Full manuscripts will be required to be submitted by 1 June 2015 and final papers will be required for publication by 25 June 2015 – delivered electronically.
- We will advise successful candidates about how and when to upload a manuscript
- Tell us how you think the item might be delivered (presentation, video clip, demonstration), a brief description of the proposed content, name(s) of author(s) and the presenter, title, company, mailing address, telephone, and e-mail address.

Why is presenting important?
Participants in the SMPTE15 conference program will reach leaders and practitioners who shape the industry’s future. Your work may even lead to publication in the SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal. The biennial SMPTE Australia conference has an international reputation for linking the cutting edge of development with the practicality of solving today’s problems.
What do we want?
Proposed papers must be informational and must address technical theory, research, innovation, application, or practice specific to any of the evolving technologies associated with the media technology industry. Student papers and case studies are strongly encouraged. Papers that are commercial or promotional in nature will not be considered, nor will those that already have been published.
What can you tell me about SMPTE15?
SMPTE15 in Sydney, Australia is projected to attract several hundred delegates alongside the exhibition that offers exhibit space for over 150 technology vendors, historically drawing upwards of 8000 visitors.
The 3-day immersive conference will kick off with a keynote address by Chris Fetner, Director of Global Content Partners operations at Netflix.
SMPTE15 calls for papers delivered on a wide range of topics, including:
4K/8K UHDTV and the quest for higher dynamic range and colour gamut; post production; broadcast infrastructure, 3G, IP, and file-based workflow; cinematography and image acquisition; fractional frame rates; psycho physics and the human vision system; asset management, storage, and archiving; the “Internet of everything,” the second screen, and alternative content; audio/video processing and compression; content security; new techniques in audio; content distribution; display technology; advanced image processing; mobile, IP, and future distribution technologies; cinema technology; immersive sound; and restoration and preservation.
Why does SMPTE do this?
When the Society of Motion Picture Engineers was constituted in Washington DC, on 10 August 1916, it set down the following as its objects:
“Advancement in the theory and practice of motion picture engineering and the allied arts and sciences, the standardization of the mechanisms and practices employed therein, and the maintenance of a high professional standing among its members.”
Over the ten decades that followed, the Society has embraced the relentless march of technology while maintaining this original vision of its founders. As we enter the centenary year of SMPTE, it is appropriate to honour that Persistence of Vision (pun intended) while gathering to celebrate how we are Defining the Future of the industry through standards development, encouraging membership and providing education resources for the global industry.
