Extra special sound treat:
Ioan Allen joins SMPTE members and guests for a cinema loudness discussion and a relaxed Q&A.
The Egg Show was brilliant. Now you have one last chance to catch Ioan Allen while he’s in Sydney, and this time up close and personal for our members and guests.
Ioan Allen is Senior Vice President of Dolby Laboratories and the Oscar and SMPTE award-winning father of Dolby’s film audio and surround-sound technologies. So who better to talk about loudness in the cinema and to answer your questions about everything sound?
As part of his first trip to Sydney in over a decade, Ioan has invited us to join him on the evening of Thursday 5 March for a unique two-part session that you won’t want to miss. And you will miss it unless you register – click the orange button below. This session is open to SMPTE members, our guests, and members of related guilds and societies. If you’re a member of ASSG, WIFT, ACS or AES, take note. But don’t take long: this will be high demand.
The topic: “How loud is a movie?”
A work in progress… exploring a new metric to quantify the subjective loudness of an entire theatrical movie.
Procedures exist to measure and constrain the levels of theatrical trailers, but have not been applied to entire movies. This work uses levels above a threshold, integrated to derive an equivalent sound level (Leq) over a ten minute sliding window: “Leq(m10)”.
The procedure does not constrain feature film levels, but does provide a method to measure the subjective level of a movie’s perceived volume so that any constraints desired may be applied by the director and sound crew at the mix stage!
Plus Q&A!
In the second part the evening, you’ll have the opportunity to interact with Ioan in an open Q&A session.
Thanks to our friends at Dolby Laboratories who have sponsored the event, there’s no charge – but registration is ESSENTIAL. And it’s first-come-first-served, so don’t delay.
