BOARD
OF GOVERNORS REPORT
By Gerry Brooks, International Governor Asia/Australia Region
- November 2003
The SMPTE technical Conference and Exhibition was held in New York
this year and the Board of Governors of the Society met on the Sunday
(16th) after the Conference ended.
Highlights from the B.O.G. meeting:
Charles Jablonski and Clyde Smith were appointed Governors-at-Large
for 2004
Lam Kwok-Luen and Gerald William Brooks were re-elected as Governors
for Asia/Australia Region.
The Long-Range Planning – Technical Orientation report published
in 2000 offered a number of conclusions and recommendations that
originated from the work of multiple task forces. To continue this
work, each of the Vice-Presidents has asked for the assistance of
2 Governors each to come up with plans to improve SMPTE services
and facilities to its membership. SMPTE, like many organisations
today, is suffering declining membership and is having to re-organise
to suit the times.
I have volunteered for the Membership workgroup under the Sections
Vice-president David Walters. The object of this workgroup is to
look at ways of maintaining and increasing membership and improving
service to members.
We will be looking at how to make SMPTE relevant to members, how
to make it relevant to the new multi-media and IT participants to
encourage new members. If anyone wants to make a submission to further
these aims, they can do so by email to brooksg@rexel.com.au
or by writing to SMPTE Australia Section, P.O.Box 88 Willoughby
NSW 2088.
The good news is that SMPTE is maintaining its Sustaining Membership.
As a Standards organisation, SMPTE is in demand more than ever as
the Film, Television and Computer industries become ever more entwined.
Engineering Committees within SMPTE are continuing apace and the
increasing demand puts extra strains on the structure. To help streamline
the processes, they have introduced web-based balloting among committee
members and other measures are being out in place to help speed
decision making.
SMPTE Journal has had a good number of papers from both the SMPTE
Australian Section Conference this past July and from IBC that are
being considered for publication.
The following are historical articles by committee members to be
published in the J SMPTE:
The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II - Television Recording
50 Years Ago: A Recollection, (scheduled for January 2004)
The Theatrical Newsreel Cameraman: Part II, (scheduled
for February 2004)
The Evolution of the Cinema Lens: Part 1, (currently
being edited)
And more are being planned.
Gerry Brooks.
