Global TV Launches New Digital OB Van

Global Television has announced the completion of the company’s latest digital outside broadcast production unit, DP6.

Designed to provide smaller-scale sports coverage, it has been fully designed and constructed in Australia by Global Television at its Homebush, NSW, facility.

Built on a 15-metre non-expanding trailer constructed by Starline Special Vehicles to Global’s design, the DP6 is a compact 12-camera/8-VTR digital video production unit.

Features of the DP6 include:

• The rear section of the truck is a grip area complete with hydraulic tailgate loader, eliminating the need for a separate grip truck on most OB’s.
  
• The air-conditioning is an integrated roof top unit adapted from the type used in tourist coaches. This design increases the interior space and allows a large belly bin area the full width of the trailer below the main floor. It also reduces the intrusion of noise by positioning the fans and compressors away from the production areas.
  
• Extensive use has been made of the latest developments in noise and heat insulation materials in the roof, walls and floor.
  
• The front of the trailer is rounded to allow more depth for the full size production area monitor wall, which in turn creates sufficient space for a producer’s desk in the main vision area.
  All production areas have dimmable down lights and individually adjustable air outlets for operator comfort. The interior is lined with ‘Frontrunner’ carpet, black on the ceiling and silver/grey and red on the walls and doors.
  
• Technically, a 3 ME Kalypso vision mixer and a 64 by 64 Talia serial digital router make up the video heart of the unit. Combine this with a Calrec S2 36 channel audio mixer and the result is a fully featured production unit.

This unit will be extensively used Fox Sports’ football coverage.
