WORK BEGINS ON NEW SBS MELBOURNE HEADQUARTERS
MELBOURNE
The Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) has commenced fit-out of
its new Melbourne headquarters in the Federally-funded Federation
Square development. The Commonwealth Government provided AUD$50
million from its Federation Fund towards the construction of the
building to house SBS as one if its tenants.
SBS will have a new home for its radio and television services,
translation and interactive multimedia activities. With its strong
track record as an innovator in the use of digital technologies,
SBS at Federation Square will create cutting edge radio, television
and multimedia studios.
"SBS is an important national cultural institution and these new
facilities will provide a new and improved base from which it can
continue to produce and expand on its significant multicultural
media work," said Minister for Communications, Richard Alston. "The
introduction of a interactive multimedia studio will allow visitors
to see the latest broadcasting technologies in use, and to interact
directly with radio and TV broadcasters and new media services."
Senator Alston said that he was looking forward to a significant
event later in the year to celebrate the opening of the building.
"This is an exciting new development for the benefit of not only
of Melbourne residents, but for the broader Australian community
as well," he said. "I congratulate all associated with the development
and construction of the SBS facility and I wish SBS well as it moves
towards taking possession of its new home."
The facilities are expected to be completed around March 2003.
