MITC
- Media Industry Technologist Certification
MITC Launches at SMPTE07
It two years since we discovered the real problem. Not only was
the the brain drain in the Media industry real, but we had managed
to lose the learning culture that existed prior to the nineties.
It just … went away.
So, here we are, 2007, and you WANT to become a broadcast engineer,
or a master control technician, or an OB Technical Director…
and… where do you go? Who do you ask? How do you sell to an
employer that you’ve got the chops, done the hard yards, and
you know your craft?
At SMPTE07 we are launching the first certification phase of Media
Industry Technologist Certification and, subject to everything running
to expectation, the first certification process will take place
in the second week of October 2007 at a cost of less than $200 for
SMPTE members. Certification is for a period of five years.
There is plenty of detailed information available on the web (www.mitc.tv)
and at the SMPTE stand in the Exhibition, and we strongly suggest
that you attend one of the short presentations which will be run
at regular intervals during SMPTE07 (adjacent to the SMPTE Stand,
A13 in Hall 3).
Whether you’re in Radio, Television, Film, Transmission,
New Media, Broadcast Operations, or Outside Broadcast; whether you’re
an employee or a freelancer; whether you’re a newbie or a
technology executive, you have a part to play in helping the Media
Industry in Australia stay the clever industry that we’ve
always been. MITC.
Formal MITC presentations will take place every day during SMPTE07
at the following times:
- 10.30 am
- 12.30 pm
- 14.30 pm
- 16.30 pm (No session at this time Friday July 20)
On Friday July 20 at 9.00am you should also attend
Session 17 of the SMPTE07 Conference: CERTIFIABLY SMART
AND EDUCATED.
Taking the form of a forum this session will pull together stakeholders
in the training and skilling process, and we’ll show you why
MITC is vital to the health of our industry. Presenters will include:
- Cameron Bailey, TV Studio Manager, NMIT, Collingwood Campus
- Margaret Cassidy, Head of Technology Strategy, Technology &
Distribution Division, ABC
- Graham Grether, Senior Technical Trainer, Kordia
- Clive Jones, Media Producer, Curtin Business School, Curtin
University

Minister
Opens Television
& Motion Picture Industry
Engineers Forum
8 March 2006
Minister for Vocational and Technical Education, the Hon Gary
Hardgrave, today opened a forum aimed at addressing the training
needs of Australia’s engineers in the picture and television
industry.
“The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers
Industry Education Initiative is industry-led and will consider
the skills requirements of these specialist engineers to ensure
their current and future skills needs are being addressed,”
said Mr Hardgrave. “The focus of today’s forum at the
Film, Television and Radio School in North Ryde, is to provide an
initial view of industry needs into the future, and to form a Steering
Committee to take the process forward.”
Participants in the forum included directors from the major TV and
radio networks, current and future Registered Training Organisations,
the Society of Motion Pictures and Television Engineers members
and industry technologists.
“Industry stakeholders have taken this opportunity to discuss
proposals such as a voluntary industry-driven certification scheme,
the incorporation of more flexible and accelerated learning pathways
and enhancing a nationally consistent training agenda.
“Industry and business needs must drive training priorities
and delivery to ensure quality training and outcomes.
“I wish all participants in today’s forum a successful
and productive outcome and look forward to hearing about the results,”
Mr Hardgrave concluded.
