Certification

A new entrant to the industry will follow a roadmap to attain an appropriate qualification that, combined with pertinent work experience, meets the entrant level MITC Certification Prerequisites.

For those already in the industry, as higher levels of the MITC Certification are rolled out, entry will be by a combination of pre-requisites and formal assessment.

The candidate’s prequalifications and levels of experience can be assessed against a Prerequisites matrix. Candidates who have the Prerequisites will be assessed by a Measurement Process – an examination or, in the case of grandfathering (click to see) , an assessment of competencies - culminating in the relevant MITC Certification for the successful candidates.

Recertification

The MITC certification will have a five year period of validity after which it will lapse. A grandfathered certification will have a three year period of validity after which it will lapse.

A, or just ahead of the expiry of the certification period, MITC recipients may request recertification. Candidate will have three options for recertification:

  • i. To re-sit the assessment process at the certified level. Certification status will be continued if the candidate achieves the assessment pass mark;
  • ii. To request recertification by meeting service requirements; or
  • iii. To sit the assessment process for the same domain at a higher level.

The service requirement set will be constructed to encourage candidates to engage with the industry and exhibit behaviours that are desirable in terms of professional advancement. Service requirements are to be determined and may include combinations of:

  • Employment, measureable experience;
  • Active membership and participation in SMPTE or other national/international society appropriately related to media technology;
  • Successful completion of accredited coursework;
  • Teaching;
  • Presentation of technical articles, papers, publications;
  • Research and development;
  • Attendance at meetings, conferences, participation in appropriate active newsgroups;
  • Active mentoring;
  • Other activities involved in media technology, and which are approved by the MITC Examination Board, etc…

Certification Levels

Within each MITC Certification Domain there are four levels, from most to least senior:

  • Level 4 or Master Practitioner or Executive Level: People who are responsible for end results. Master Practitioners are highly business-focused, and typically are in senior or advanced leadership roles which may correspond to titles of Chief, Network, Director, or VP.
  • Level 3 or Senior Practitioner: People who not only work without direction and who may or may not be in supervisory roles, but also are creating things and demonstrating leadership skills. Senior Practitioners are recognised as self-actualised and business focused.
  • Level 2 or Practitioner: People competently doing their job and who can do the work without supervision or direction.
  • Level 1 or Associate Practitioner: People at Entrant level, representing the new, low-experience candidate.

This structured approached is designed to create a practical fit and relevance to career opportunities and seniority levels within the industry thereby ensuring that MITC certification is a relevant measure for industry employers and a worthwhile certification for candidates to pursue.
